FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions:

If you have a question that you don't see please feel free to ask me /contact-me Thanks.

***Please note, that due to COVID and social distancing restrictions, all tuition will take place online.***

Are you a qualified teacher?

Yes, I completed my PGCE (General Primary Education) with Qualified Teacher Status on 8th July 2011.  I have over 7 years’ experience teaching Early Years and Primary age children.  I have a breath of classroom experience; I have worked with a wide range of students including those with special educational needs.

How long have you been a tutor?

I have been tutor since 2018, tutoring both Face to Face and Online.  I always tailor the level of work covered to the individual student’s needs. To develop both their self confidence and attainment levels.  I offer tuition lessons from EYFS - KS4 (4 - 16yrs).  Please see my /testimonials to view current and past clients feedback.

I've never used a private tutor before, how does it work?

Lessons last for an hour. During the first lesson I assess your child’s needs through activities and discussion with yourself and your child. I tailor lessons to the child’s needs and to reflect their interests, I like to include games and practical activities whenever possible. I continually assess progress to determine next steps in their learning.

Do you guarantee your work?

I cannot guarantee that a student will pass a specific test, or earn a specific score in class or on any given test. I will however guarantee that I will strive to provide the best possible service. I will do everything in my power to help grades and skill sets improve. If for any reason I feel that I cannot adequately provide the student with what he or she needs, I will say so.

What is needed for online tutoring?

You will need a laptop, pc or ipad/tablet, and a good internet connection.  You will need a webcam if you do not have one built in to your device.  Most newer devices have microphones built in, but do check as you may need a separate one (a standalone or via a headset).  A mouse works fine for most students, however if you prefer you can purchase a graphics tablet which can be useful for ease of writing.  If you use an iPad/tablet, you can use a stylus pen or your finger.

How does online tutoring work?

As with face to face tutoring lessons last for an hour. During the first lesson I assess your child’s needs through activities and discussion with yourself and your child. I tailor lessons to the child’s needs and to reflect their interests, I like to include games and practical activities whenever possible. I continually assess progress to determine next steps in their learning.  For online, we use zoom.us as our video link, I will send you the instructions for downloading this software (instructions can also be found  /links-forms-and-resources). We will be using bitpaper.io as our collaborative whiteboard.  We will be able to write on this board at the same time, just like a face to face lesson.

What are your hours of operation?

I generally answer phone calls, texts and emails from around 9am – 8pm. I do not answer phone calls, texts or emails when I am in a tutoring session. . Please be patient if I don’t get back to you straight away, as I will return you call, text, and email as soon as possible.

Do you tutor home-educated students?

Yes, I am aware that there are many different approaches to home education, so please get in touch to discuss your individual requirements.

How much do you charge for tutoring?

Please see /services-and-pricing-1

How do I pay?

Payment is by BACs, and must be paid and received at least 48hrs in advance of the first lesson.

Will homework be given?

I am happy to provide homework when requested.  I would however expect any homework I set to be attempted/completed by the following lesson.  In order so that I could go through this with the student to check understanding and target next steps for a given topic. If your child does not complete homework given, then no further homework will be provided until it has been attempted.

Do you tutor in school holidays?

Yes, I tutor throughout the school holidays, except Christmas, New Year, and when I am away on holiday myself.

What are your term dates?

Testimonials

Nicola was an excellent tutor for my year 6 daughter. She provided lessons in Maths and English both in our home and remotely, especially useful during the Covid 19 lockdown. My daughter enjoyed the lessons, and really developed in both areas from them. Nicola provides useful feedback and was always happy to discuss any education related questions."

MattYear 6, August 2020

Nicola has provided very thoughtful, thorough Maths tuition for our son in year 6. She has really been creative in the sessions, thinking of personally tailored ways to engage his interest. She has a kind manner and has helped to build his confidence as well as his ability. For a child who thought he couldn't stand Maths, I've been amazed by how much he has enjoyed his lessons. The online lessons have worked brilliantly too."

SuzyYear 6, July 2020

Nicola has provided excellent maths tuition to our daughter who is in year 8 and we would highly recommend her to anyone who is thinking about having tuition for their child . She has provided wonderful support and we have seen our daughter’s progress with her maths improve dramatically since starting tuition with Nicola; she has really made a big difference and our daughter’s confidence with her maths is far greater than before. We moved from face to face tuition to online tuition as a result of the COVID-19 situation and this transition has proven extremely successful. Our daughter has continued to thrive with her maths with the online tuition and she really enjoys using the online tools and interaction during her sessions, we have been very impressed with this method. We would highly recommend Nicola’s tuition service and would like to say how grateful we are for her continuing support, professionalism and calm approach; she continues to be a welcome source of relief for our daughter, who before her tuition was finding maths a struggle but now has the understanding and interest to develop and learn and enjoy this subject."

ClaireYear 8, July 2020

Nicola has been tutoring my daughter for about 6 months. She makes her lessons fun and during lockdown her online zoom lessons have been invaluable. My daughter was lacking confidence in maths and literacy and Nicola is really helping her to build confidence, especially in maths which she has made good progress in. I would highly recommend Nicola and her friendly and fun approach to learning."

JulesYear 3, July 2020

Nicola was excellent to communicate with, always prompt and responsive to messages. She makes sessions fun and we saw an improvement in my son's ability in maths, and in his confidence in the classroom. Many thanks."

JosieYear 6, July 2020

I just want to send my thanks for offering us online tutoring via Skype. Following a few weeks of face to face lessons, a change in circumstances meant my daughter wouldn’t be able to attend for 3 weeks. Rather than have to cancel you offered us online lessons which I was happy to accept, but to be honest a little sceptical. I shouldn’t have been. The lessons are structured really well and work perfectly using webcams and online learning tools. You’ve done a really great job of keeping the lessons interesting but also really focused. We’re happy to continue with our online lessons and have now booked more for the Easter holidays. We highly recommend them and Nicola to anyone."

JemmaYear 6, March 2020

Highly recommended. Using Nicola for SATS maths prep. Lessons very fun and interactive, great communication with Nicola. The interactive online whiteboard is very good and my daughter also said she was `kind`. So very happy."

DianeYear 6, December 2019

Nicola is working wonders with our 10 year old daughter building her confidence in her ability for maths. She structures the sessions well and takes into account what our daughter is struggling with in Y6. We chose Nicola as she is a qualified teacher and not only can support with Maths confidence but has a great understanding of how anxiety can affect children’s learning and has the skills to help overcome them. Would recommend her as a great support to any child who is struggling"

JoYear 6, November 2019

Nicola has been an excellent teacher. She is well prepared and understands student needs. She has been patient with learning needs and creates engagement and interest in Maths even though its virtual classes. Our daughter enjoys the Maths lessons. Would definitely recommend her."

RaghavYear 7, September 2019

Nicola is well-prepared, friendly, gentle, and clearly knows her stuff! I would have no hesitation in recommending her to other parents. My son was particularly reluctant to have a tutor, and its been so easy with Nicola."

SuzyYear 5, August 2019

My daughter finds Maths lesson with Nicola very helpful. Nicola inspires confidence and enthusiasm. Her lessons are fun and she is always reliable."

JYear 5, March 2019

Nicola supports my daughter with engaging, curriculum-based KS2 Maths tutoring and my daughter says this is very helpful."

JudithYear 5, February 2019

Nicola is very prompt and has engaged with the children extremely well. They look forward to seeing her each week. Updated 19.7.19 Nicola enables my sons to grow in confidence to achieve great SATS results."

NigelYear 6, October 2018

I have been using Nicola to tutor my daughter for a while now. After using a previous home tutor I was reluctant to do it again as the previous tutor was very formal and didn't give the confidence that my daughter needed. Nicola however is a breath of fresh air, from a little ten year old that hated maths she loves it now and looks forward to Nicola coming. I would def recommend her. Very flexible, asked lots of questions prior to coming. Her lessons are very well structured, fun and most of all filling our daughter with confidence."
